What is ISO 22301?

ISO 22301 is the international standard for Business Continuity Management Systems (BCMS). It provides the framework for organisations to anticipate, prepare for, respond to, and recover from disruptive incidents — whether those incidents take the form of a cyber-attack, a supply chain failure, a natural disaster, or a public health emergency.

The standard defines what a mature business continuity capability looks like: clear ownership, documented plans, regular testing, and a cycle of continual improvement. Critically, it integrates with incident response, crisis management, and IT disaster recovery — ensuring that when something goes wrong, the organisation's response is coordinated rather than chaotic.

A Business Continuity Plan that has never been tested is not a plan — it is a hypothesis. ISO 22301 builds the discipline of regular testing into the standard itself, which is the only way to know whether your continuity arrangements will actually work when they are needed.

Why Business Continuity Has Moved Up the Board Agenda

Several converging factors have elevated business continuity from an IT concern to a board-level priority for UK organisations:

  • The UK Cyber Security and Resilience Bill explicitly requires operators of essential services to demonstrate operational resilience, not just prevention capability
  • DORA (Digital Operational Resilience Act) — which applies to UK financial services firms with EU operations — mandates documented, tested resilience programmes
  • Post-pandemic boards and executive teams have direct experience of what unplanned disruption costs
  • Cyber insurance underwriters are increasingly requiring evidence of tested business continuity arrangements as a condition of coverage
  • Major clients and procurement frameworks — particularly in financial services, healthcare, and public sector — now routinely require BC certification from critical suppliers

The Business Case

BenefitWhat It Means in Practice
Operational ResilienceThe ability to maintain critical services during a disruptive event — protecting revenue, client relationships, and reputation simultaneously.
Contractual ComplianceDemonstrable proof that you can meet your delivery obligations even under adverse conditions — essential for SLA-governed contracts.
Regulatory AlignmentISO 22301 provides the documented evidence base required by UK regulators, DORA, and NIS2 for operational resilience obligations.
Insurance BenefitsMany cyber and business interruption insurers offer improved terms to organisations with a certified, tested BCMS.
Stakeholder ConfidenceClients, investors, and partners gain confidence from knowing that a major incident will not permanently disable the organisation.
Expert Insight — Mahad, CCISO · CISSP · CMIOSH · ISO 27001 Lead Implementer "In my experience working with Critical National Infrastructure organisations, the difference between a good incident response and a catastrophic one comes down to whether the business continuity plans were tested before the incident — not written after it. ISO 22301 forces organisations to test realistically, which is uncomfortable but invaluable."

The Certification Roadmap

1. Business Continuity Maturity Assessment

What we do: We evaluate your current resilience posture against ISO 22301 requirements — assessing the quality of existing plans, the clarity of roles and responsibilities, and whether your recovery arrangements have been tested. The Cyphene platform provides a real-time maturity dashboard showing your readiness score across each section of the standard.

What you get: A clear picture of where your continuity capability is strong and where the critical gaps are — prioritised by the potential impact of those gaps on your organisation.

2. Business Impact Analysis and Risk Assessment

What we do: The Business Impact Analysis (BIA) is the foundation of ISO 22301. We work with you to identify your critical business activities, define Recovery Time Objectives (RTOs) and Recovery Point Objectives (RPOs), and map the resources required to restore operations within those timeframes. The Cyphene platform's risk and impact modules support this analysis, ensuring it is documented and evidenced rather than theoretical.

What you get: A robust BIA and risk assessment that provides the evidence base for your Business Continuity Plans — and that satisfies the scrutiny of an external auditor.

3. Plan Development, Integration, and Evidence

What we do: We help you develop Business Continuity Plans that are genuinely usable under pressure — not documents that require calm reflection to navigate during a crisis. Plans are integrated with cyber incident response procedures, crisis communication protocols, and IT disaster recovery arrangements. All documentation is centralised within the Cyphene platform.

What you get: A suite of tested, integrated continuity plans — with the audit trail to prove that testing has taken place and that lessons have been incorporated.

4. Exercising, Internal Audit, and Certification

What we do: We design and facilitate tabletop exercises and, where appropriate, live simulation exercises to test your plans under realistic conditions. The internal audit follows, identifying any remaining non-conformities before the external certification audit. We support you through both stages of the formal audit process.

What you get: ISO 22301 certification and, more importantly, a genuine confidence that your organisation can respond effectively to a real disruptive event.
