What is ISO 27001?

ISO 27001 (currently ISO/IEC 27001:2022) is the leading international standard for Information Security Management Systems (ISMS). It is important to understand from the outset what ISO 27001 is — and what it is not.

It is not a technical specification for firewalls, antivirus software, or penetration testing. It is a management standard: it defines how an organisation establishes, implements, maintains, and continually improves its approach to managing information security risk.

The standard is built around a risk-based approach. Organisations identify the information assets that matter most to them, assess the risks to those assets, and implement a proportionate set of controls from the standard's Annex A to mitigate those risks. The result is an ISMS that is tailored to the organisation's specific risk profile — not a generic set of technical controls applied indiscriminately.

The most common misconception about ISO 27001 is that it is primarily a technical exercise. It is not. The majority of the standard deals with governance, policy, process, and people. Technical controls account for a relatively small portion of what an auditor will examine.

Why ISO 27001 Matters in 2026

Several regulatory and commercial developments have made ISO 27001 effectively mandatory for a growing number of UK organisations:

  • UK GDPR requires organisations to implement 'appropriate technical and organisational measures' — ISO 27001 provides the evidenced framework that demonstrates this
  • The UK Cyber Security and Resilience Bill will expand NIS Regulations to cover more sectors and supply chains, increasing the pressure on organisations to demonstrate formal security governance
  • DORA mandates information security governance for financial services firms with EU operations
  • Public sector procurement frameworks — including GovAssure — increasingly reference ISO 27001 as the standard against which security maturity is assessed
  • Cyber insurance underwriters are applying greater scrutiny to applicants, with ISO 27001 certification supporting both eligibility and premium levels

The Business Case

BenefitWhat It Means in Practice
Client and Stakeholder TrustCertification provides independent verification of your security governance — a far stronger assurance than a self-completed questionnaire.
Regulatory EvidenceThe documented ISMS provides the evidence base required to demonstrate compliance with UK GDPR, NIS Regulations, and sector-specific requirements.
Supply Chain AccessMany enterprise clients and public sector bodies now require ISO 27001 certification from suppliers handling sensitive data.
Incident PreparednessThe standard requires documented incident response procedures — meaning organisations with a certified ISMS are better prepared when security incidents occur.
Operational DisciplineThe process of implementing ISO 27001 typically identifies and eliminates significant security inefficiencies — improving operations alongside governance.
Expert Insight — Mahad, CCISO · CISSP · CMIOSH · ISO 27001 Lead Implementer "As a CISSP and ISO 27001 Lead Implementer, I have worked with organisations across Critical National Infrastructure, financial services, and regulated enterprise. The organisations that get the most value from ISO 27001 are those that treat it as an operational discipline rather than a compliance exercise. The certificate is the by-product of building a genuinely secure organisation — not the goal itself."

The Certification Roadmap

1. ISMS Maturity Assessment and Gap Analysis

What we do: We evaluate your existing security governance — policies, procedures, risk management practices, and documented controls — against the requirements of ISO 27001:2022. The Cyphene platform provides a structured assessment against each clause and Annex A control domain, producing a maturity score and prioritised remediation plan.

What you get: A clear view of where your current security governance meets the standard and where the genuine gaps are — without the ambiguity of a generic self-assessment questionnaire.

2. Risk Assessment and Statement of Applicability

What we do: The risk assessment is the foundation of ISO 27001. We work with you to define your information asset inventory, identify the threats and vulnerabilities relevant to those assets, assess the associated risks, and select appropriate controls from Annex A. The resulting Statement of Applicability (SoA) — which documents which controls apply, why, and how — is a central document in any ISO 27001 certification audit.

What you get: A robust, evidenced risk assessment and Statement of Applicability that demonstrates to auditors that your ISMS is genuinely risk-based rather than template-driven.

3. ISMS Implementation and Evidence Building

What we do: We support the implementation of the policies, procedures, and controls identified in your remediation plan. All ISMS documentation — your Information Security Policy, risk treatment plan, SoA, access control policies, incident response procedures, and supplier agreements — is centralised within the Cyphene platform, creating a permanent, version-controlled audit trail.

What you get: An implemented ISMS with the documented evidence to support it — ready for internal audit.

4. Internal Audit, Management Review, and Certification

What we do: We conduct a thorough internal audit using the Cyphene platform's audit forms, identifying and closing any remaining non-conformities. The management review follows — a formal requirement of the standard that ensures leadership has reviewed the ISMS's performance and made informed decisions about its direction. We support you through both stages of the external certification audit.

What you get: ISO 27001:2022 certification, with an ISMS that provides ongoing protection and regulatory assurance beyond the certificate itself.
